Taking Stock, where to go now
So, totting it up the other day, I've now got 138 pts of stuff for Menoth outside of the casters, which is a fair bit.
The list of what I have:
Warcasters:
Reznik
Harbinger
pSeverius
Jacks
Avatar
Fire of Salvation
Blessing of Vengeance
Plastic Combo-jack
Units
Full KEE with UA
Full Temple Flameguard with UA
Full Holy Zealots with UA, plus a couple extra
Knights Errant
Full Bastions
Full Cinerators
2 x min Choir
Solos:
Vilmon
Covenant
Hierophant
Reclaimer
Vassal Mechanik
Wracks
KEE Seneschal
Stuff I have ordered but has not yet arrived:
Warcasters:
pKreoss
Warjacks:
Crusader
Repenter
Revenger
Reckoner
Units:
Daughters of the Flame
Solos
2 Vassals
So totting it up, I'm getting to the point where I have a very soild list of models to choose an army from. After a few extra bits and pieces to round things out, it will be time to work out what to have a crack at next.
There are a couple of different directions to head in:
- Tier lists for a bit of fun
- Develop two 50pt tourney lists (and a 100pt list) for Nationals in September.
I'll probably go with the tier option first, as I'll want to go for the tourney stuff as we go closer to the date.
I'll have to have a good look at the tier lists and work out which ones sound appealing. I definitely want to have a cracka at Reznik, as 7 pt Reckoners sound amazing. Just need to get a second one and some Flameguard Cleansers and we're cooking with gas.
I'll really need to become more familar with tourney style play to really get my head around what I want from my tourney lists.

Long Weekend Action - Part 3
Got ina couple mroe 50 pt games vs Skell on Monday - we decided to try out scenario play for the first time, and actually both brought a pair of lists.
First game was killbox, and I elected to bring Reznik while Skell brought pGaspy. I was hoping the much more restricted killbox would allow me to get a bead on gaspy. In this game, Skell was pretty much kicking my arse all over the tbale for the most part, until I managed to get into gAspy with a perditioned Templar using beatback, which was pretty sweet. First time I'd given the Templar a go, and it proved to be a solid jack. Still taking the Reckoner over it when it arrives though! I'm also keen to try out the sidestepping Dervish.
Second game we played a scenario that doesn't actually exist lol. In this one, there were 3 objectives along the middle of the table, and needed to score three points starting bottom of the second. What we didn't realise was that one of the objectives was supposed to disappear after turnone, but ah well. This time it was pSevvy vs the Coven, and Sevvy pretty much dominated the game. This was Skells first time running the Coven, and I think he conclouded that his list needed to change a fair bit to be effective.

Long Weekend Highlander Goodness - Chunky part 2
On the Sunday we played a Highlander event at Ace Comics and Games. The list I took was:
Reznik
Fire of Salvation
Errants + UA
Hierophant
First game was a Menoth civil War against Owen, who had brought Kreoss along to the party.Owen actually brought less points than he could have, so he was at a disadvantage, but Kreoss' feat would be a big problem. This turned out to be the case, but Kreoss failed his assassination attempt via spells. This gave Reznik an avenue to charge him the following turn if he could get past a free striking Exemplar. He squeezed by on one wound and put Kreoss on a wrack!
Lesson learnt: KReoss feat is nasty, but needs some ranged weapons to back it up.
Next I played Juffo-Wup with Cygnar, who had Stryker along with a Defender, Strom Blads (Knights - they all looks the same to me). Snipe + Earthquake + Disruption was always going to make this one tough. I tried to get up there as quickly as possible, but an ill-advised attempt to use Perdition left Reznik exposed to be sniped.
Lesson learnt: don't get too caught up in opportunistic Perditioning.
Last game I played Skell. Made a similar silly Perdition mistake in this game, and ended up getting picked off by a Pistol Wraith.
Lesson learnt: learn the previous lesson again!
That was it for the event, and then I played the organiser, DancingPidgeon in a 25 pt game. He played an entirely Jack list and Darius. This was going interesting, but I managed to get an angle on Darius with the Fire of Salvation via Perdition to get a win.
So, 8 games over the weekend, and I learnt quite a few things.
In a charge, people who can't get there can still run. Very handy.
Started to really use the Errants well, and found them excellent.
Still don't like Fire of Salvation with Reznik - too much Skornergy between Iron Aggression and the Imprint.
Hierophant was fantastic with Reznik - that extra point of focus really helps.
Must remember to activate Hierophant to use the cheap spell ability.

Long Weekend Highlander goodness - Chunky part 1
Skell and I both went up to Brisvegas this weekend for some warmachine. We went to Irresistable Force and played there most of the day, then had a 15 point highlander event on the Sunday at Ace Comics and Games.
First game was a 35 pter between me and Skell. Skell busted out his Bane Knights for the first time and they raped face, putting me in a bit of a desperate position. I then had Reznik make a sweet Engine of Destruction, Perdition charge 17" to try and assasinate pGaspy, but rolled a double one to hit for one of the attacks and fell short. Needless to say Gaspy didn't fail next turn.
Lesson learnt: Perdition does actually work sometimes, but my dice still hate me.
I then played a guy called John who had a Skorne army. This was a new experience for me as I'd never played against Hordes before. We had a 25 pter, and it was not going well for me, as I had taken a slow melee based force against a caster with Inhospitable Ground while I had no terrain mitigation. Things looked very grim, but Jhn eventually exposed his caster (XerxeS?) to a charge from Reznik, who made a nice Wrack out of him.
Lesson learnt: Terrain mitigation is a must have.
I played a small Highlander game against Gav Clarke, the owner of IF. I took Reznik, FoS, Bastions and Vilmon vs a 15 pt list for Gav which revolved around the battlebox and some ManoWars. Got unlucky to lose Vilmon first turn to a scattered AOE, and then found out what Boundless Charge does. Gav soon had Sorscha wrap things up personally.
Lesson learnt: Find out if the opponent has a movement spell!
Skell and I had our first 50 pt game at the motel - it was a bit awkward as we played on a circular table about 40" diameter with no terrain. I really can't remember much about the game - even who won?

Games of newness
So yeah, I should prolly give my take on the games Skell and I played, but I've been slack. First up, we got plenty of rules wrong, which is to be expected in our first games. After every game, we look at more rules and pick more up.
The games were a bit weird. I think we both had a couple of issues with trying to play a GW style movement then shooting then combat style at times.
I felt I was doing better in a general combat sense in the games, but couldn't touch gAspy himself, which caused me to lose both games. Thinking back on it, with gAspy's better mobility, I'm going to need to win that battle of attrition first whilst protecting my caster.
I also had another game the following day against Daniel Mitchell's Khador. I switched things around a bit this time, and went for a more ranged heavy force with a Reckoner and a Vanquisher. Dan was playig a Butcher list with some Doomreavers, Widowmakers, Man o War Shocktroopers, a Juggy and a Destroyer. Again, the general game seemed to be going in my favour, but I seemingly through the kitchen sink at the butcher and he came through still alive (on 2 wounds). I think this really was a matter of bad luck - with even average dice he'd have been very dead.

First Impressions...
I had my first games of Warmachine today.
The forces of Cryx lined up against the Protectorate. Our lists were roughly.. 27pts (what we both pretty much had), Turns out mine was 29? Whoops Levi is worth more then I thought, though i was not impressed with it at all, Nice gun but. ;)
Protectorate
Warcaster Reznick (pimpdick)
Heavy jack Avatar of Menoth
5 Examplar Bastions
10 Knights Examplar
Heavy jack Crusader
Cryx
Warcaster Iron Lich Asphyxious
Heavy jack Deathjack
Heavyjack Leviathan
Heavyjack Sayer
6 Mechanithralls
Withershadow combine
A summary of the game, I deployed, he deployed.
Turn1, me.
I moved my force forward, Deathjack leading.
Ben
Moved his army forward. Killed 2 mechanithralls with Knights Exemplar.
Turn2, me.
Deathjack charges in and removes 3 knight examplar's, Withershadow kills 3 Knights, Leviathan trys to damage the avatar, and bounces(hit but no damage) on his armour.
Ben
Avatar shows the Deathjack how its done, Leaving DJ on 2 Hit boxes left... Only to be cleaned up by the Bastions. Knights have a shot at Asphyxious and fail. Crusader? no idea what it was doing... just chilling from memory, guarding a flank against mechanithalls..
Turn3, me.
Withershadow back off, kill 3 Knight's, Slayer moved towards bastions, Mechanithralls charge the crusader.. and break its fucking legs(damaged its movement, basically immobilising it) to our amusement. Asphyxious charges the Bastions, pours some damage across them, teleports back. Leviathan charges bastions and pour more damage onto the bastions (fuck me these guys are fucking nuts to kill)
Ben
Avatar crushes the leviathan, Bastions charge the slayer, only 2 get there, they damage movement and one arm and cortex. Last errant jumps on Asphyxious to try and lock him down.. Crusader massacres the mechanithralls.
Pimpdick by the way has been hiding this whole game behind the bastion wall, sitting back and buffing.
Turn4, me
I back the fuck off since I'm getting slaughtered in combat. And my ranged spells seem to be going quite well... Slayer with one army, lays into the bastions he can reach(2?) and first hit brings them down to the lowest hit boxes before he has to start removing models, Pretty sure he even got to kill the first one. Withershadow blast 2 more and kill 2 yay. Asphyxious kills the errant and Hellfires another bastion and teleports back outside Avatars threat.
Ben
Considers his options big time. Avatar moves forward, Pimpdick dances up behind him as a giant fucking shield. Last bastion destroys the slayer. Crusader considers a career change.
Turn5,me
Withershadow wastes the last bastion. Asphyxious decides enough fucking around. Time to destroy the Avatar of Annoyance... He charges in, fully loaded with focus and pops feat for 14 focus.... Turns out Avatar not so tough. I break it down to only a few boxes with only its main weapon working? But it was immobilised and as such completely useless against me now. Also note, has it not been immobilised Asphyxious would have been slaughtered..
Ben
Not able to run or hide now, Pimptank decides to take a chance and throw some spells at Asphyxious and camp his left over focus for arm buff, and hope he doesn't get one hitted.
Turn 6, me
Withershadow turn back and line up on the avatar for a charge, Not wanting to risk the free move/attack Pimpdick gets with spells they Pass.
Asphyxious, spells or charge? So i charge.. hehe Smashes Pimpdick in the face leaving him on 2 Hitboxes... Fuck.
Pimpdick special ability kicks in and he gets a free attack. Hits, High damage roll = Asphyxious on 1 hp.... omfg.. almost.. Lol
Then Asphyxious cleans up.
Game 1, Cryx. On nothing but 1 Hp.
So yeah, I made alot of mistakes and i also put deathjack in harms way intentionally to see how the game worked. Anway heres some thoughts on the game and units.
GAME
I like the mechanic's alot. The rules are clear and easily understood. I love the way everything depends on combination's of units and Ability's. I love how you can overextend and block off your own attacks.
Warjacks are properly tough, and deadly.
Balancing your focus across your army is really challenging. I found myself screwed alot because i didn't allocate focus when i should of.
It was fun.
UNITS
Withershadow.. omfg awesome. These guys are just awesome. Good magic spells. Good at combat. Hard to kill.
Mechanithralls are so cheap... but POW15 Hits hurt arm17 jacks. Alot.. hehehe But there very very fragile. But you get 6 for 3 points, and it took 3 of them to disable a heavy jack.
Leviathan... Meh... To work it proper.. you would need to load it up with focus... Not good for Asphyxious who likes to keep his focus.
Slayer... It was free thanks to Asphyxious, got stuck in terrain, probably better as a seether. Seether being basically the same jack for 3 pts more its just a million times better.
Deathjack... Lol, He's just ridiculous... But was also very dead.
Asphyxious... I kept him back too much... Never really utilised his spells.
Now onto GAME 2. Dubbed Pimpdicks Rematch.
We decided on a smaller game. Cannot remember why.
Protectorate
Warcaster Reznick (pimpdick)
Heavy jack Avatar of Menoth
5 Exemplar Bastions
Heavy jack Crusader
Choir
Vassal of menoth?
Cryx
Warcaster Iron Lich Asphyxious
Heavy jack Deathjack
Heavyjack Seether
6 Mechanithralls
Withershadow combine
So basically Ben removed his Errants, for the choir (basically a jack buffing unit... could of been annoying but ahahahahahhHAHAHAHhah read about this later..) and some other Vassal thing that also buffed jacks.
I took out the leviathan, and upgraded the slayer to a seether.
This game Ben deployed. I deployed. Ben 1st turn.
Turn1, Chunkster
Everything moved forward, Buffs went up. Bastions built a sausage fest wall in front of Pimpdick.
Me
Everything moved forward.
Turn2, Ben
Moved his shit around again and forward a bit, spread out his choir to keep both jacks buffed etc.
ME
Asphyxious moved forward, then... I decided i might try out this AOE of his on the block of bastions. Oh.. Target a bastions, Hits.. AOE will get onto 3 Bastions and Pimpdick. I pour on the damage across the bastions and reznick. I decide to pump out my feat.. this is where it got nasty.
Asphyxious's feat Restores my focus to full. AS well as a weak 14" AOE against all enemy living units. I killed 3 of the 4 choir members. :) Anyway.. by the end of the 3 AOE spells and Feat i teleported back out of harms way safely. HAHAHA All the bastions were on 1 HP except the unit leader was on 2 hp. Reznick had 6 HP left. Lol...
Then Mechanithralls charged the bastions and kill 2. Withershadow move up. Seether and DJ line up on the Avatar.
Turn3, ben
Bastions kill some mechanithralls, Crusader kills mechanitralls, 1 left. Pimpdick kills last mechanithrall.
Avatar moves across towards Pimpdick.
ME
Withershadow kill 2 bastions, Seether and DJ move forward to try and sacrifice one so the other will kill avatar. Asphyxious snipers the last choir dude out, and teleports backwards.
Turn4, Ben
Avatar charges DJ, breaks his legs. Crusader moved towards withershadow, Bastion towards withershadow, Pimpdick behind the crusaders shadow.
ME
Seether charges vassal, slaughters it. DJ punches avatar, does good damage but nothing broke. Some spell on the avatar lets him free move into Asphyxious, DJ free hit damages his shield arm? Asphyxious destroys the avatar (didn't learn from last game? lol) and teleports safely away. Withershadow charge bastion and crusader, so lets see what these guys can do in combat.. i read online there good at jack murdering. Turns out.. the internet was correct. Kill the bastion, Kill the crusader. Though the crusader got a free hit from reznicks thing... But didn't actually kill one.. lol only 4 damage needed 5. These guys are so win. 2 Of them wiped out a crusader heavy jack.
Turn5, Ben
Pimpdick slaughters the withershadow. What? He is the head of Public relations.
ME
Asphyxious Hellfires pimpdick and kills him. Pew Pew
Game 2, Cryx. Asphyxious the untouchable.
After game thoughts? Asphyxious is his own win condition. Everything in my list's is just a distraction to clear a path for him. Now i see why his AOE is brutal as fuck.
I definitely need arc nodes to deliver his spells.
I did alot better this game. That said.. were only using the units we have.. and i don't see the avatar working with reznick... he has alot of JACK buff's but they only work on his battle group of jacks witch the avatar cannot be part of(his rule).
But yeah i had a good time with the rules. Everything that came up was quickly cleared up. I totally recommend this game.
It is much more mature/easy/clear/win/fun compared to 40k.
The forces of Cryx lined up against the Protectorate. Our lists were roughly.. 27pts (what we both pretty much had), Turns out mine was 29? Whoops Levi is worth more then I thought, though i was not impressed with it at all, Nice gun but. ;)

Progress....
Progress.. Still going with the deathjack hehe he is seriously top heavy... But these are my models built so far. Front left to right is the Seether helljack, Mechanithralls, Iron Lich Asphyxious, Leviathan helljack, and the withershadow combine.
Next mission is some undercoat then ill probably use the leviathan to test a paint scheme. I want to take a small bit of time to do this, as i want to paint this army to look tabletop decent.
As far as a scheme? I'm a fan of the army standard. Always have prefered to make my army look less unique and/or more part of the larger whole and main faction. But i wanna try a few differn't painting styles out... like layering to see if i can make a half decent paint job.
Anyway... gotta get DJ's arms on now and hope the model doesn't snap in half... ^_^

Some pics!
OK, so I am definitely the painter of the two of us. This is not to say I am any good, but I can pump out models to a decent tabletop standard pretty quickly when I put my mind to it. Skell on the other hand has never really painted much, but concentrates on destroying me utterly at every game we play while I bitch about how broken the faction he chose is.
So, the first model I got was Reznik, and though its probably not ideal to use your primary model as your test model, thats what I ended up doing. The imagery in my head when reading through Reznik is that he's someone who would quite literally walk through fire to nail a heretic. That sounded pimp, so I had a crack at it.

Also, being prepared for Skell to kick my arse at this game:

If you can't work out Skell's real name from this, you have issues.
Also, if you think the flames on the base look like orange worms, fuck you :p

Picking some stuff
The pattern for me with a new army tends to be I first go and get all the models I really like first, get frustrated with how the army plays, and start to round it out into a nicer force, while keeping the elements I really like. I originally wanted to use the HArbinger for this reason, but she was unavailable when I was in the store, so I blagged Reznik, who also looks pimp.
So, as Skell mentioned, we got some stuff. We have a Highlander tournament coming up on the 13th of June, so I wanted to get anough stuff to try and get a painted force together for it. I'm definitely taking Reznik, so I just had to get a jack, a unit, and a solo.
I pretty much just figured I might as well buy some expensive (points wise) stuff to fill out the points. The Avatar doesn't use jack points, so it was out, so I ordered the Fire of Salvation, which should do OK with Reznik. I also grabbed Exemplar Bastions, since they look awesome, block LOS to Reznik, and from all I have read seem like an all round solid unit, and probably fairly forgiving for beginners. For the solo, I really liked the look of High Paladin Dartan Villmon, and he also appears in Harby's tier list.
I must have missed the send button on the original order, so when I eventually submitted it, I also added Harby and a plastic jack, which I will magnetise.
When we went back to the store, I grabbed a max unit of Knights Examplar Errant, half a Choir, an Avatar, and some Cinerators. Yes, I know the Cinerators are crap, but they look pimp and are in Reznik's Tier list, so I'll end up using them a bit at some point.

Once again, the Army Faction chooses me... Maybe I didn't want to play Cryx...
Well definitely not true. I do like undead and evil/demonic styled armies. Just the Cryx capital city is a namesake to me!
Yo, I'm Skell. That's been my nickname for as long back as i can remember, everyone i know from my parents to work colleagues call's me by that.
I've been a wargamer for hmm since 2005? Primarily focused on warhammer 40k. With a few stints into warhammer fantasy. With the local lack of 40k game (especially on a compeditive level) enthusiasm and the wargame scene in general dying horribly fast. I was soon to go down a long road of expanding my gaming horizons. With jumping on several gaming bandwagons, eventually the road took a turn towards Warmachine MK2. I knew very little about the game previously, one thing i had heard from online forums is the MK2 rules set was apparently solid as(something 40k would appreciate).
Chunky introduced me to the game one afternoon after his purchase of the rule book, where he showed me the page on Iron Lich Asphyxious. I was pretty much hooked just on his look(Lich fan boy). But the line and sinker came with his Fluff blurb and their capital city being a namesake to me. So was born my army of choice... Cryx it would be.
With my initial purchase of the new Iron Lich Asphyxious 2010 model. So was my commitment sealed. I'm a big sucker for the Wicked looking models, so my consumerism quickly tried rapidly drain my bank account. But i will keep(tryed lol...) the curb on any major purchases until i get my Cryx faction book and learn to play the game.
This was until last Saturday (15th) where i just happened to be standing in front of warmachine on the shelf. I had actually been planning purchase's of models for my Malifaux crews, but a gaming store(Love, Dice and Paintbrushes) owner had not been able to attend unfortunately, to the club we were attending(Blind Pig, Brisbane) where he was going to be displaying his Malifaux wares. So I'll have to wait till next time or order online.
On our return home we decided to drop by Ace comics and games in Annerly, Brisbane. They have an awesome store. Not a single spot in the whole place had wasted space. This is also the location of my first Warmachine tournament, mid next month. Anyway, so there i was in front of the warmachine shelf's with $200 in cash. Well i couldn't help myself... A Deathjack, Seether, Withershadow Combine, and box of Mechanithralls later... ^_^ i was satisfied.
So yeah, that's my introduction. To be clear i have ordered 2 Bane thrall boxes, the new Plastic Helljack box, Bane lord Tartarus and purchased a Leviathan Helljack as well. So once again i buy a crap load before i actually play the game.
Now to figure out how to build my Deathjack....

Welcome to our Warmachine blog
This blog belongs to a couple of fools who decided to take up Warmachine. Hopefully you will either find something educational or at least get a laugh from our newbish ramblings.
I am Chunky, and fellow blogger/skanky ho will be Skell.
I found out about Warmachine Mk2 via the D6generation podcast, which is a pretty general gaming podcast with a couple of keen Warmachine players on it. It sounded like a pretty good time to jump into the game, as I imagine there will be a lot of other newbs jumping in. I had also recently started playing Malifaux, and was finding I very much like the intricate interactions thatcan be made in these skirmish games, especially since I've become tired of the time investment and lack of balance in the GW systems I've been more familiar with. Of course, when you live in regional Australia, its not a given that you'll be able to sustain a player base for any other game system, but apparently Lismore (the town I live in, about 45,000 people) used to have a number of Warmachine players.
I thought initially I would be a Cryx player, as I liked the look of some of the models. I bought the rulebook and read through the fluff and the minis gallery though, and decided on Khador, and specifically Vlad.I really like the Vlad fluff, and the Vlad model seemed really nice. I bought the Khador book and started planning out various Vlad forces.
I went to Brisbane, which is our nearest capital city to pick someone up from the airport, and went to a store there to kill time. The one thing they had at the time for Warmachine was the Menoth book, and I was keen to see if the Vlad/Vindictus story continued, so I picked that up. Really liked the look of the models, and on reading their fluff, they didn't seem like as big a douchenozzles as in their rulebook fluff, so I started to take an interest in them, thinking they could be my second faction.
I was back in Brisbane again on the airport dropoff, and this time went to a store more known for Warmachine, and picked up some more stuff. I got the Cygnar book (don't worry, I still think they're mostly a bunch of botches, though I think Stryker is cool), as well as pVlad model and Reznik, who simply looks pimp. Imagine my disgust when I got home and went to put minis together only to find out that Vlad was wearing clown shoes. I cut the bastards toes off and they still looked ridiculously large. Well, I thought, there are two other Vlad models - wait no, apparently he has multiple pairs of fucking armoured clown shoes - WTF?
So, needless to say, I immediately switched faction to Menoth. I think I will have to come up with a basing scheme for Khador that will hide Vlad's feet in a snowdrift or something.
